An optimized Google Business Profile is the fastest lever for local visibility: it decides whether your business shows up in the local pack, on Google Maps and in local search, before anyone even visits your website. This guide walks through nine concrete steps to get the most out of your profile, with zero ad spend required.
1. Set up and verify your profile
If you haven't already, create your profile at business.google.com and complete verification, usually by postcard to your business address, sometimes by phone or email. Without verification, your profile stays incomplete and ranks noticeably weaker. While you're at it, check whether a duplicate or orphaned listing already exists for your address, for example from a previous owner, since Google will otherwise work against you.
2. NAP consistency: the invisible foundation
NAP stands for name, address, phone number. These three details need to match exactly across your website, your Google Business Profile and every directory listing, down to the street abbreviation and phone number formatting. Inconsistencies read to Google as a trust problem and hold back rankings, even when each individual listing is technically correct. A quick check usually suffices: search your business name and cross-check every result against your website.
3. Pick the right primary category, and a few relevant secondaries
Your primary category influences ranking more than almost any other profile setting. Choose the most specific option that fits, "Web design company" rather than the generic "Consultant", even if the specific category has lower search volume. Then add two or three relevant secondary categories, but resist adding every category that vaguely applies: it dilutes the topical clarity Google is trying to read from your profile.
4. Photos that actually drive clicks
Profiles with more photos measurably get more direction requests and website clicks than profiles with few or no images. Upload a clear logo, a cover photo, real interior and exterior shots, and team photos, not stock imagery. Add new images regularly rather than uploading ten once and never again, activity itself is a weak but real ranking signal. Product photos or work samples round things out and help prospects form a picture before they ever contact you.
5. Google Posts: small updates, real impact
Posts appear directly on your profile and expire after roughly a week, which makes them a simple, recurring signal of freshness. Use them for offers, new services, events or recent projects, with a clear call to action and, where possible, your own image instead of generic stock photography. One or two posts a month is enough, consistency matters more than frequency.
6. Seed your own Q&A, and list your services
The Q&A section on your profile is publicly editable by anyone, including people with no connection to your business. Ask the most obvious questions yourself and answer them directly, hours, directions, scope of services, so no outdated or incorrect answers sit there instead. Alongside that, list your key services or products in the dedicated section with a short description, giving Google extra topical context.
7. Earn reviews, and respond to every one of them
Reviews are one of the strongest ranking signals, but purchased or fake reviews violate Google's policies and can get a profile suspended. Instead, actively ask satisfied clients for a review, most simply via a direct link right after a project wraps up. Just as important: respond to every review, positive and negative alike. A calm, solution-focused reply to a bad review often reads as more convincing to future customers than ten positive reviews with no response at all.
8. Don't forget citations and local backlinks
Beyond the profile itself, mentions of your business on other websites, known as citations, count too, even without a link. Industry directories, chambers of commerce, local media or partner businesses listing identical NAP details confirm to Google that the location is real. A mention in a local blog post or a link from a neighbouring business often carries more weight than a paid listing in a generic directory, simply because the context is topically and geographically relevant.
Common mistakes that cost you rankings
A keyword-stuffed business name ("Sharobella - Vienna Web Agency SEO Shopify") instead of your actual legal name. Multiple listings for the same location. Reviews left unanswered for months. Outdated holiday hours. Each point looks small on its own, but together they noticeably hold a profile back, and every one of them takes minutes to fix.
